The seaside town of Sunset Beach, NC is home to a three mile barrier island and a thoughtfully developed mainland. A historic Pontoon Bridge spans the Intracoastal Waterway connecting the island to the mainland. Sunset's floating swing bridge is the last of its kind on the Eastern Seaboard and will someday be replaced. There are no commercial high rises on the island, just a mile and a half of coastal homes tastefully set back from the ocean and salt marshes. The island continues on uninterrupted by development for another mile and a half along the Bird Island coastal reserve.
